Since winning the Paolo Borciani competition in Italy in 2005, the Pavel Haas Quartet, formed in 2002, has established itself as one of the great chamber ensembles of our time, performing in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and recording regularly and exclusively on the Supraphon label. Their most recent release contains four of Martinů’s quartets. “Their account of [Dvořák’s] American Quartet belongs alongside the greatest performances on disc,” reported London’s Sunday Times. “In this repertory they are simply matchless today.” The venerable BBC Music magazine has ranked the Pavel Haas Quartet among the ten greatest string quartets of all time, alongside the Alban Berg Quartet, Amadeus Quartet, Borodin Quartet, and other stellar ensembles. The Pavel Haas Quartet has held residencies at the Cologne Philharmonie, Birmingham Town Hall, Prague Spring Festival, and Glasgow Royal Concert Halls. From 2025 to 2027, it is Artist-in-Residence at the Litomyšl Festival alongside the Czech Philharmonic. Based in Prague, the Pavel Haas Quartet takes its name from the Czech composer who was imprisoned at Theresienstadt in 1941 and tragically died at Auschwitz three years later. His legacy includes three wonderful string quartets. 2nd LMMC appearance.
